Classical(ly) Unbound
on Ward's Island
(+ wine)

This festival-support concert in collaboration with members of Toronto's Canzona and Opera 5 is part of our urban outreach. The absolute-world-class musicians are donating their performance and all net proceeds will go to supporting Classical Unbound Festival's performance and education ambitions.

A special thanks to Canzona Chamber Players for helping to make this happen.

Pastoral-historic, set in St Andrew by-the-Lake Anglican Church, Ward's (Toronto) Island. Extensive green-space adjoins the church. Do bring your own non-alcoholic drinks and nibbles to satisfy pre- or in-concert peckishness.

Concert Wine: from "By Chadsey's Cairns Winery" in Prince Edward County will be available for purchase by the glass, from Richard Johnston himself, the co-owner of the winery. He also had a significant hand in saving Ward's Island for residents (details below). As for us, Classical Unbound Festival played its first concerts in his winery barn amongst the hay-bale audience seats in 2015.

Location: St Andrew by-the-Lake Anglican Church on Ward's (Toronto) Island, a 15' walk from Centre Island Dock or a 20-25' walk from Ward’s Island Dock. Ferry schedules are relevant to getting there on time.

Time: Church opens at 18:30, concert at 19:00.

Richard Johnston's Ward's Island Story

In 1981 Richard was part of the political landscape. He leaked the 'Barry Swadron Report' that addressed the future of the Toronto Islands residential community, and which recommended the preservation of this community in the face of contravening forces. This leak forced the issue into the public arena, and the battle continued over the next decade between those who wanted the homes dismantled and those who wanted them protected as residences.

By 1990, Richard was an NDP MPP, and he was appointed "Special Advisor on the Toronto Islands" after a series of meetings produced a report that recommended the establishment of a land trust to preserve the community. In 1993 an act based on that recommendation was passed that has helped to preserve the community to this day.

Richard will be back on-Island for the concert, with true tales, a few yarns and cases of his wine for by-the-glass sale before the concert and at intermission.
