Classical(ly) Unbound
with Jon Kimura Parker
and Steinway Canada
(+ wine & food)

Jon Kimura Parker
is getting 'unbound' with us.

This festival-support concert in collaboration with Steinway Canada, and with the help of Friends of NAC Orchestra (FNACO), is part of our urban outreach. The absolute-world-class musicians are donating their performance and all net proceeds will go to supporting Classical Unbound Festival's performance and education ambitions.

A special thanks to Steinway Canada's Jennifer Messer and Alex Thomson for helping to make this happen.

Alongside the music, we've assembled 3 elements to move you:

  • Served before the concert: Chef Maria Camizao's authentic Mexican cuisine, for your pre-concert supper pleasure (we do not profit from this, but believe it "agrega mucho" to the concert experience).
  • The urbane, polished, reverent environment of Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa with 25 pianos steadfastly poised and 24 silently presiding over the performers.
  • Served at intermission: Included with ticket is 1 glass of choice wine from our Aug 18 and 25 "Grange of Prince Edward Estate Winery" venue, provided to us at charitable prices (thanks Caroline Granger).

~SUPPER VENUE OPENS AT 17:00 (unlicenced)~

Maria's food: Maria has been cooking for 30 years, taught by her mother and raised in Mexico City. She will be serving a specially-priced/created smorgasbord of authentic, traditional, off-menu Mexican dishes in her just-opened casual restaurant "NUVO", attached to the concert venue, from 17:00 until the concert at 19:30. This is an unlicensed supper (alcoholic drinks will not be available), with non-alcoholic drinks available.

Menu: Table d'hôte... If you choose to join us for Maria's cooking, including your main course preference in checkout notes will help us plan ...Thanks.

Cactus salad (nopales [Opuntia cacti / prickly pears], tomatoes, onions, fresh cheese) /or/ Tostada de Jicama (shrimps, mango).
            ~ and ~
Pollo con mole (chicken breast, mole sauce, with rice, refried beans) /or/ Cerdo en salsa verde (pork, tomatillo sauce, with Mexican rice, vegetables) /or/ Carne a la tampiquena (beef flank steak, guajillo sauce, with Mexican rice, refried beans, tamale, guacamole, vegetables).
            ~ and ~
Churros with chocolate /or/ Flan of cheese and corn.

Concert: Classical(ly) Unbound with Steinway Canada will feature 7 of us, including Jon Kimura Parker on piano. This is an unconventional program considering our instrumentation: violin, flute, viola, cello, and piano. Duo, quartet and quintet combinations will enable you to focus on individual timbre, and enables us to program especially 'contrasting' pieces for the context, a polished space that highlights pianos as sentient sculptural art.

Wine: The 4 concert wines include The Grange's: 2014 Select Riesling (XD, tart, fresh, crisp); 2013 Estate Chardonnay (D, unoaked, pear, yellow apple, 'light/soft'); 2013 Select Gamay Noir (D, raspberry, spicy, red current, 'lighter'); and 2013 Select Cabernet Franc (D, blackberry, black current, smoky finish, 'full-bodied').

Location: Steinway Piano Gallery Ottawa at 1481 Innes Road, Gloucester (Ottawa), Ontario (this address is the unnamed access-road off of Innes Road itself, an access-road that also leads to several large stores, including Home Depot and Sears Home). A gallery-caliber piano exhibition space, 70 person capacity, 20 parking spots out front and overflow parking across the street at Sears Home. Concert venue doors open at 19:00.
